About the Treatment

Finally Say Goodbye to Stubborn Dark Spots & Melasma

Melasma and hyperpigmentation are among the most challenging skin conditions to treat — they're deeply rooted, often triggered by hormones, sun, and stress, and notoriously resistant to creams alone. At Get Glowing MedSpa, we use the Discovery Pico Plus to deliver real, lasting results where other treatments fall short.

The Discovery Pico Plus emits ultra-short bursts of energy in picoseconds — one trillionth of a second — that shatter excess melanin deposits into microscopic particles, which your body then naturally clears away. Unlike older Q-switched lasers, the picosecond technology does this with dramatically less heat, making it significantly safer for deeper skin tones and melasma-prone skin where heat-based treatments can actually worsen pigmentation.

The result is a visibly clearer, more even complexion — without the risk of post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation that comes with less precise technologies.

Important note about melasma:

Melasma is a complex, chronic condition influenced by hormones, UV exposure, and genetics. While the Discovery Pico Plus produces excellent results, we always pair laser treatment with a personalized maintenance protocol — including medical-grade sun protection and a customized home care routine — to keep results lasting longer. We'll walk you through everything at your consultation.

Discovery Why Picosecond Technology Is a Game-Changer for Melasma Pico Plus, The Gold Standard in Picosecond Lasers

Traditional laser treatments use nanosecond pulses that generate significant heat — a major risk factor for melasma patients, as heat can stimulate melanocytes and worsen pigmentation. The Discovery Pico Plus operates in picoseconds, shattering pigment through photoacoustic pressure rather than heat. This makes it one of the safest and most effective options for treating melasma and pigmentation across all skin types, including Fitzpatrick IV–VI.

How It Works

Your Treatment, Step by Step

  • Skin Assessment & Consultation: We begin with a thorough skin analysis using specialized tools to map your pigmentation, assess its depth, and identify the type and root cause of your discoloration. This allows us to build a targeted treatment plan specifically for you.
  • Skin Cleansing & Numbing: Your skin is thoroughly cleansed to remove all makeup, oils, and skincare products. A topical numbing cream is applied for 20–30 minutes before the procedure for your comfort.
  • Protective Eyewear: Medical-grade protective eyewear is provided to shield your eyes from the laser. Safety is always our first priority at every step.
  • Discovery Pico Plus Laser Treatment: The laser handpiece is carefully passed over the pigmented areas in precise, controlled passes. The picosecond pulses target melanin clusters and shatter them without damaging surrounding healthy skin. Most clients feel a mild snapping or warming sensation — generally very well tolerated.
  • Cooling, Calming & SPF Application: After treatment, a calming, anti-inflammatory serum is applied along with a high-SPF sunscreen. Your provider will review your personalized aftercare plan before you leave.

What to Expect Before, During & After

Before Your Treatment

Immediately After Treatment

Immediately After Treatment

  • Discontinue retinoids, brightening acids, and exfoliants at least 5–7 days before your session.
  • Strict sun avoidance for at least 2 weeks before treatment. Even minimal UV exposure can worsen melasma and compromise results.
  • No self-tanner for at least 2 weeks prior.
  • Arrive with clean, product-free skin and inform your provider of any medications, especially hormonal treatments or photosensitizing drugs.
  • Use a broad-spectrum SPF 50+ daily in the weeks leading up to your appointment.q

Immediately After Treatment

Immediately After Treatment

Immediately After Treatment

  • Expect mild redness and warmth in the treated area — this is normal and typically resolves within a few hours to 24 hours.
  • Some clients notice the pigmented spots briefly appear darker immediately after treatment — this is the melanin rising to the surface before shedding. This is a good sign!
  • A slight frosting or whitening effect may be visible on the treated spots during the session — this fades quickly.
  • Do not pick, scratch, or exfoliate the treated areas as the pigment naturally sloughs off over the next 1–2 weeks.
  • Avoid makeup for at least 24 hours post-treatment.

Post-Treatment Care (Ongoing)

Post-Treatment Care (Ongoing)

Post-Treatment Care (Ongoing)

  • SPF 50+ every single day is absolutely essential. Sun exposure after treatment can trigger a rebound in melanin production and undo your results.
  • Use only gentle, soothing skincare for 7–10 days. No acids, retinols, vitamin C, or scrubs.
  • Hydrate consistently — a barrier-supportive moisturizer AM and PM.
  • Wear a wide-brim hat and seek shade whenever outdoors post-treatment.
  • Your provider may recommend a medical-grade brightening home care routine to enhance and maintain your results between sessions.

Healing & Results Timeline

Post-Treatment Care (Ongoing)

Post-Treatment Care (Ongoing)

  • Days 1–3: Mild redness. Pigmented areas may look temporarily darker.
  • Days 4–10: Darkened spots begin to flake and shed naturally — revealing clearer skin beneath. Do not accelerate this process.
  • Weeks 2–4: Significant lightening of pigmentation becomes visible. Skin tone looks more even.
  • After each session: Progressive improvement with each treatment.
  • Best long-term results with 4–6 sessions spaced 3–4 weeks apart, combined with a consistent SPF and home care routine.

Your Melasma & Pigmentation Questions, Answered

Please reach us at support@getglowingasap.com if you cannot find an answer to your question.

Yes. One of the key advantages of picosecond technology is its significantly reduced thermal effect compared to older lasers. The Discovery Pico Plus is one of the safest laser options for Fitzpatrick skin types IV, V, and VI, where heat-generating treatments pose a higher risk of post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation. Our team has extensive experience treating all skin tones safely and effectively.

Melasma responds well to a series of treatments rather than a single session. Most clients see excellent results with 4–6 sessions spaced 3–4 weeks apart. Because melasma is a chronic condition, ongoing maintenance treatments and a consistent home care routine are also important for keeping results long-lasting.

Melasma can recur with UV exposure, hormonal changes, or without proper maintenance — this is true regardless of the treatment used. That's why we emphasize daily SPF 50+, sun avoidance, and a supportive skincare routine as essential parts of your treatment plan. With the right protocol, results can be maintained long-term.

Downtime is minimal — most clients experience only mild redness for a few hours to a day. Some darkening and natural flaking of pigmented spots may occur over 1–2 weeks as the treated melanin surfaces and sheds. Most clients can return to their normal activities the next day with SPF applied.
