What Actually Changes in Your Skin After 40
August 15, 2026
Skincare
Nobody prepares you for what happens to your skin in your 40s.
You've been doing the right things. Moisturizing. Wearing SPF. Maybe even doing treatments. And somewhere around 40 — 42, 45 — you notice that the skin that used to bounce back doesn't quite bounce back the same way anymore.
Here's what's actually happening. And more importantly, what you can do about it.
Collagen production drops significantly
You lose about 1% of collagen per year after 25. By 40, that's 15% gone. After 40, the rate accelerates slightly — and the collagen you do produce is less organized, less dense.
The result: skin that looks thinner. Fine lines that become more permanent. A loss of that firmness that used to just be there.
What helps: anything that stimulates new collagen production. Microneedling, laser facials, fractional laser, PRX. These treatments work at the dermal level where collagen lives. Creams don't reach there. These treatments do.
Estrogen drops — and it takes skin with it
Estrogen plays a significant role in skin thickness, hydration, and collagen synthesis. As levels decline in perimenopause and menopause, skin becomes drier, thinner, and more prone to sagging.
What helps: a consistent collagen-stimulating treatment protocol plus a pharmaceutical-grade home routine that addresses hydration and cellular renewal.
Cell turnover slows down
At 20, your skin renews itself every 28 days or so. At 40, that cycle has slowed to 45 to 60 days. Dead cells stay on the surface longer. Skin looks dull. Texture looks uneven. Products absorb less efficiently.
What helps: retinol to accelerate cell turnover. The ZO Getting Skin Ready protocol to keep the surface clear so actives can penetrate.
Pigmentation becomes harder to prevent
Years of UV exposure and hormonal fluctuations accumulate. Melanocytes that have been slowly overactivating for years start producing visible spots and uneven tone more readily.
What helps: tinted SPF 50 every single day. The ZO Pigmentation Protocol. Pico laser for existing spots.
The good news
40 is not the beginning of the end for your skin. It's actually when having the right protocol makes the biggest visible difference.
The clients I see the most dramatic improvements in are almost always in their 40s and 50s — because they're consistent, they understand that results take time, and they commit to the plan.
That's the whole secret.
