Think Laser Hair Removal Isn’t for Your Skin Tone? Think Again
January 23, 2026

If you’ve ever been told that laser hair removal isn’t safe or effective for your skin tone, you’re not alone. This myth has stuck around for years — but thanks to modern laser technology, it’s simply no longer true.
Today, laser hair removal can be safely performed on all skin tones when the correct laser and settings are used. At Get Glowing Medspa, every treatment is customized to your skin tone, hair type, and goals to ensure safe, effective, and long-lasting results.
Skin Tone vs. Skin Type — What’s the Difference?
In everyday conversation, skin tone usually means skin color, while skin type refers to whether your skin is oily, dry, or combination.
In medical aesthetics, providers use the Fitzpatrick Scale, which classifies skin into Types I through VI based on pigmentation and how the skin responds to sun exposure. This scale helps determine which laser wavelength and settings will be safest and most effective for your skin.
How Laser Hair Removal Works
Laser hair removal is a method of long-term hair reduction. The laser delivers targeted energy to the pigment in the hair follicle, damaging it at the root and slowing future growth.
With a series of treatments, hair grows back finer, lighter, and eventually stops growing almost completely. Before treatment begins, your provider evaluates your Fitzpatrick skin type and selects the appropriate laser and settings for your skin.
Laser Hair Removal by Fitzpatrick Skin Type
Fitzpatrick Type I – Very Fair
This skin type burns very easily and does not tan. Clients with very fair skin and darker hair often experience excellent results, as laser energy can easily target pigment in the hair follicle.
Fitzpatrick Type II – Fair to Light
This skin type burns easily and tans minimally. Most clients in this category respond very well to laser hair removal, particularly when darker hair is present.
Fitzpatrick Type III – Light to Medium
This skin type can tan but may still burn. Laser hair removal remains highly effective, though recent sun exposure should be avoided. Treatments are best performed once the skin has returned to its natural baseline tone.
Fitzpatrick Type IV – Medium to Light Brown
This skin type tans easily and rarely burns. At this range, laser selection becomes especially important to avoid complications. Nd:YAG lasers are commonly used because they safely bypass surface pigmentation while effectively targeting hair follicles.
Fitzpatrick Type V – Dark
This skin type has deeper pigmentation and rarely burns. Nd:YAG laser technology is the safest option when properly calibrated, allowing effective treatment while protecting the skin.
Fitzpatrick Type VI – Deepest Skin Tones
This skin type represents the deepest pigmentation. Not all lasers are appropriate, but medical-grade Nd:YAG lasers have been proven safe and effective when used by trained professionals.
At Get Glowing Medspa, treatments for deeper skin tones are customized carefully to ensure safety, comfort, and results.
Does Skin Oiliness or Sensitivity Matter?
Skin dryness or oiliness does not significantly affect laser hair removal results.
Laser treatments may even help reduce irritation and breakouts caused by shaving or ingrown hairs. Clients with sensitive skin may experience redness for a bit longer after treatment, but laser hair removal remains safe when performed correctly.
Treatments should be postponed if the skin is inflamed, broken, or experiencing an active flare-up.
Who Should Not Get Laser Hair Removal?
While laser hair removal is safe for all skin tones, it does have limitations.
Laser energy targets pigment, so it is not effective on blonde, red, gray, or white hair. Treatment should also be avoided if the area has active infection, open wounds, or inflammation.
Other contraindications may include:
- Pregnancy or breastfeeding
- Certain autoimmune conditions
- Use of blood thinners or immunosuppressants
- Recent isotretinoin (Accutane) use
- Certain antibiotics
