Melasma and Hyperpigmentation: The Treatments That Actually Work

Brown spots, uneven tone, patches that seem to darken no matter what you try — hyperpigmentation is one of the most stubborn skin concerns we treat. And melasma, its most complex form, requires a different strategy than most people expect. Here's what actually works, and why.

Pigmentation issues are among the top reasons clients come to us at Get Glowing. And while the skincare industry is flooded with products that promise to "brighten" or "even tone," the reality is that true, lasting correction of hyperpigmentation — especially melasma — requires a clinical approach. The right combination of in-office treatments and medical-grade home care can make a remarkable difference. The wrong combination can make things significantly worse.

Understanding the Problem

Melasma vs Hyperpigmentation: They're Not the Same

Both conditions involve excess melanin — the pigment that gives skin its color — but they have different triggers, different depths, and require different approaches.

Hyperpigmentation

An umbrella term for any darkening of the skin. Causes include sun damage (solar lentigines), post-inflammatory pigmentation from acne or injury (PIH), and age spots. Generally responds well to a combination of laser, chemical peels, and topical actives.

Melasma

A specific, chronic form of hyperpigmentation driven by hormones (pregnancy, birth control, hormonal fluctuations) and worsened significantly by UV exposure and heat. Melasma sits deeper in the skin and can be bilateral (both sides of the face). It requires careful, layered treatment — aggressive approaches can backfire.

Knowing which type you have changes everything. This is exactly why we always begin with a thorough skin analysis before recommending any treatment plan.

The Treatments

What We Use at Get Glowing — and Why

Gold Standard for Pigmentation

Discovery Pico Plus Laser

The Discovery Pico Plus is our primary tool for treating both hyperpigmentation and melasma. Unlike older nanosecond lasers, picosecond technology delivers energy in ultra-short pulses — so fast that it shatters pigment into microscopic particles without generating the heat that can actually worsen melasma.

The photoacoustic effect (pressure rather than heat) makes it far safer and more effective for deeper pigmentation and darker skin tones. Results are visible after a single session, and a series of 3–6 treatments produces dramatic, lasting clearing.

  • Best for: solar lentigines, PIH, epidermal melasma, mixed-depth pigmentation

Skin Renewal

Chemical Peels

Medical-grade chemical peels accelerate cellular turnover, breaking up pigmented cells in the upper layers of skin. We use peels strategically — often as a complement to laser — and carefully select the depth and formulation based on your skin type and pigmentation pattern. For melasma especially, the wrong peel can trigger a rebound darkening. In the right hands, peels are highly effective.

  • Best for: superficial pigmentation, PIH, skin tone evening, pre-laser prep

Collagen + Brightening

Microneedling with PRP or Exosomes

Microneedling creates micro-channels in the skin that trigger controlled healing — and when combined with PRP (platelet-rich plasma) or exosomes, those channels deliver powerful growth factors and brightening signals deep into the dermis. This combination improves texture, reduces PIH, and supports overall skin health. We also offer NCTF as a microneedling add-on for clients seeking enhanced hydration and glow alongside pigmentation correction.

  • Best for: PIH from acne, dull uneven tone, texture alongside pigmentation

Daily Defense

ZO Skin Health Medical-Grade Topicals

In-office treatments alone will not hold if you're not supporting them at home. ZO Skin Health's formulations — including retinols, brightening serums, and SPF — are an essential part of any pigmentation protocol. Products like ZO's Brightalive and Retinol Skin Brightener inhibit the melanin-production pathway, helping to prevent new pigment from forming while your skin heals from treatment.

  • Best for: maintenance, prevention, and amplifying in-office results

"With melasma especially, more aggressive is not always better. The best results come from a strategic, layered approach — not the most powerful laser on the market."

What to Know Before You Start

The Rules of Treating Pigmentation

01 SPF is non-negotiable

UV exposure is the number-one trigger for all forms of hyperpigmentation — and for melasma, even brief sun exposure can undo weeks of treatment. A broad-spectrum SPF 50+ applied daily (and reapplied midday) is the single most important thing you can do to protect your results.

02 Heat is a melasma trigger

This is one that surprises many clients: it's not just UV light — heat itself can stimulate melanocyte activity. This means saunas, hot yoga, very hot showers, and even cooking over a hot stove can worsen melasma. Your treatment plan will address this.

03 Hormonal management matters

If you're on hormonal birth control and struggling with melasma, it's worth discussing this with your gynecologist. Treating the skin while the hormonal trigger remains active is like bailing water from a leaking boat — progress is slower and relapse is more likely.

04 Patience and consistency win

Pigmentation correction is a marathon, not a sprint. Most clients begin to see meaningful improvement within 4–6 weeks of starting a combined protocol, with continued improvement over 3–6 months. Maintenance treatments 1–2 times per year help lock in results long term.

A note on DIY treatments

Many over-the-counter brightening products contain low concentrations of active ingredients that provide minimal clinical benefit. Some — particularly harsh exfoliants or unregulated "bleaching" products — can cause irritation, worsening of PIH, or chemical burns. If you've been doing your own thing for months without results, it's time to see a professional.
